The Weight of Sky

About this piece

A natural rock arch spans the frame, its fractured surface rising above an uneven foreground of slabs and loose stones. In black and white, strong sunlight separates the pale formation beyond the opening from the deeply shaded rock overhead. The low viewpoint gives the arch a monumental presence, balanced by the delicate clouds visible through it.

The story

September light rests on the exposed stone, stopping at the edge of the arch’s shadow. Overhead, long fissures trace dark lines across the massive span. A thin cloud hangs within the opening, its softness set against the broken edges of rock. The eye passes beneath the arch toward the bright formation beyond, finding space where everything first seems solid.
