Where Stone Opens

About this piece

An upward view through a narrow sandstone canyon reveals sweeping, striated walls surrounding an irregular opening of blue sky. Light turns the inner curves gold and orange, while nearby folds deepen into rose and violet shadow. The asymmetrical composition balances the weight of stone with a small, luminous expanse of air.

The story

September light reaches into the narrow opening and rests along a golden curve. Overhead, blue sky holds its clear shape between the walls. Fine lines travel across the sandstone, bending around ledges and disappearing into shadow. The eye follows them slowly, until the enclosed space seems to open.
