A weathered wooden boat rests on supports on a whitewashed terrace, its peeling hull surrounded by oars, loose timbers, and rope. The story

Late July light settles hard and clear on the white terrace. Across the boat's hull, remnants of yellow paint cling to exposed grain, and a length of rope hangs toward the ground. The oars reach outward without touching water, their shadows tracing another set of lines across the plaster. Behind them, the cliff gathers bands of darkness into its folds. Everything rests, yet the boat keeps the shape of movement.
