About this piece

Seen from above, a rowboat carries figures partly concealed by a pale umbrella across water patterned with broad shadows. In black and white, the umbrella becomes a luminous geometric center, while the outstretched oars and disturbed surface lend movement to an otherwise quiet composition.

The story

August light finds the umbrella and rests along the boat’s narrow edges. Beneath its fabric, the passengers remain mostly hidden, their small shelter moving through alternating brightness and shade. The oar blades stir pale curls into the darker water. Behind the stern, reflections stretch and loosen as the boat passes.
