The story

September light settles across the scrub, drawing sharp shadows beneath the trees. The nearest trunk twists upward, its deeply ridged surface holding pockets of darkness. Beyond it, pale ground opens toward the sheer faces of the buttes. A thin gathering of clouds rests near the horizon, leaving most of the sky clear. Root and stone share the stillness, each giving the eye somewhere to pause.
