Mike Gedj’s close study of a frangipani bloom reveals yellow petals edged in creamy white, their curling surfaces defined by light and shadow. Unopened buds surround the flower, while a softly blurred background isolates the branching structure and luminous color.
The story
I was drawn to the way the pale edges held the light while the yellow deepened toward the flower’s center. Around the open bloom, tightly folded buds seemed to keep their own time. I framed the flower against the darker spaces between the branches, letting the surrounding forms soften. What stayed with me was the contrast between the spread of those petals and the closed bud beside them: two stages of becoming, held in one frame.
