About this piece

Mike Gedj captures two United States Air Force Thunderbird jets in a mirrored formation, one inverted above the other. Their crisp markings and opposing tail fins create a striking symmetry against the softly clouded sky, turning a display of speed into a study of balance.

The story

I followed the two aircraft through the viewfinder, drawn to the space between them as much as to their bright markings. With one inverted above the other, the sky seemed to lose its ordinary sense of up and down. I wanted to hold that brief alignment: two machines moving together, their tail fins pointing toward the same narrow interval of blue. In the photograph, the motion settles into an almost architectural calm.
