About this piece

Mike Gedj frames a sunlit beach from above, tracing the diagonal meeting of pale sand and turquoise water. Repeating blue canopies and scattered orange umbrellas give structure to the scene, while beachgoers and breaking waves interrupt its orderly patterns.

The story

From above, I watched the beach gather into patches of color: blue shelters in rows, orange umbrellas opening bright circles on the sand. My eye kept returning to the waterline, where the arrangement loosened and people stepped into the foam. Each wave briefly redrew that edge. I wanted to hold the bustle and the repetition together, the many separate afternoons unfolding inside one wide sweep of summer light.
