About this piece

A sand-dusted boardwalk draws the eye between weathered posts toward a bright strip of turquoise sea. Dense grasses, arching palms, and a timber shelter frame the passage, while slanting shadows trace a second geometry across the boards.

The story

I paused where the sand had begun to cover the boards. Ahead, the path narrowed between its ropes before opening onto the beach, with two sailboats small against the horizon. I kept the weathered shelter at the edge of the frame; its rough timber gave the brilliant water something quiet to stand beside. What held me there was the threshold itself, the few remaining steps between enclosure and open sea.
