Where the Boards End

August 2021

About this piece

A wooden pier extends into blue water, its converging edges and paired pilings directing the eye toward two empty chairs and fishing rods. Bright daylight brings out the grain of the boards and weathered posts, while red-and-white bands punctuate the predominantly blue and golden palette. Above the low horizon, layered clouds lend expansiveness to the ordered, quiet composition.

The story

Late August light rests on the boards, revealing each knot and ridge. Between the capped posts, the water shifts from translucent green to deeper blue. Two chairs stand at the end of the pier, with fishing rods angled nearby and nothing to interrupt the view. Small ripples loosen the pilings’ reflections, while the straight wooden path holds its course toward the horizon.
