The Weight Of Air

About this piece

A parachutist descends beneath a red, white and black canopy beside an immense British Army banner bearing the Union Jack. Sunlight articulates the banner’s creases as its sweeping diagonal dominates the frame, dwarfing the suspended figure. Faint pink smoke threads the blue sky, lending the aerial display a sense of suspended motion.

The story

On this May day, the sky holds an expanse of black fabric, its folds catching narrow ribbons of light. The Union Jack spreads across the banner while the parachutist hangs small beneath the curved canopy. Fine suspension lines gather the broad shapes into the figure’s harness. Pink smoke thins into the blue, marking a passage that the air slowly erases.
