About this piece
A sunlit terrace overlooks white hillside buildings, a cross-topped church tower, and two cruise ships on luminous blue water. Repeating white railings draw the eye along the rose-colored paving toward the bay, while the tower anchors the left side of the composition. Strong light and pale, distant landforms lend the scene an expansive stillness.
The story
July light gathers on the white railings and falls in sharp-edged shadows across the terrace. A pot of greenery rests beside the wall, its leaves a small counterpoint to the broad blue water. Beyond the church tower, the ships seem almost motionless against the distant land. The narrow passage holds a quiet space between the intimacy of a doorway and the openness of the sea.
