The story

Late August light spreads gold across the clouds, catching the rust along the bridge. Each concrete pier holds its dark footing in water that seems almost brushed smooth. The eye follows the steelwork toward the distant shore, where its great weight narrows to a thin line. Above it, the clouds gather and rise; below, their color settles into a muted sheen.
