The story

Late July gathers in the gold between the clouds. Beside the dock, the boat holds its buckets, coiled hose, and floats in the shade of its open stern. Small ripples loosen its reflection, stretching blue paint and white rails into wavering shapes. Beyond the posts, the water opens toward the dark shoreline, carrying the sky's brightness into the distance.
