About this piece

Whitewashed buildings and a broad sweep of yellow architecture interlock across a hillside, punctuated by red doors, blue railings, and flowering terraces. Strong sunlight defines curved roofs and parapets against cool shadows, while stairways thread through the tightly layered composition. Small figures lend human scale to this intricate arrangement of private terraces and connecting passages.

The story

Late July light settles across the curved walls, brightening white plaster and deepening the yellow of the terraced buildings. A stairway disappears between houses and emerges farther up, drawing the eye through narrow pockets of shade. Umbrellas shelter tables, chairs face outward, and flowers spill color along the parapets. People occupy small corners of the scene, their presence almost absorbed by its many levels. Every turn seems to hold another quiet place to sit.
