A gray squirrel holds a pine cone between its forepaws, its upright profile set against sunlit dry grass and softly blurred tree trunks. Positioned left of center, the animal's sharply resolved fur and long, trailing tail anchor an expansive field of golden light, lending quiet dignity to an everyday act of feeding.
The story
On this July day, light turns the dry grass gold. A squirrel lifts a pine cone toward its mouth, its paws gathered around the rough scales. Its tail rests across the ground like a dark brush, each pale hair catching a little brightness. Beyond this small meal, the trees dissolve into shadow and warmth.
