About this piece

Two U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds jets share a close, parallel formation, one upright and the other inverted against an uninterrupted blue sky. Sunlight catches their white fuselages and red accents, while deep shadows describe the aircrafts’ undersides. Their opposing orientations create an almost mirrored composition, balancing speed with an impression of suspension.

The story

In the clear light of mid-March, two pointed noses draw parallel lines through blue. One canopy faces upward; the other turns toward the earth beyond the frame. Red tips and star-marked tails give the pair a measured, repeating rhythm. Between the aircraft, a narrow interval of sky becomes the photograph’s quiet center.
