The story

Late June arrives with a low ceiling of cloud and bright color on the water. Two boats lean into the wind, their white sails drawing slanted lines beneath the bridge’s measured cables. Farther out, smaller sails gather along the dark hills like scattered marks on a horizon. At the rocky edge, thin folds of foam rise and dissolve; beyond them, the crossing continues.
