About this piece

Centered between broad expanses of blue, a small sailboat rests beneath a low band of cloud. Its slender mast and rippled reflection form a near-continuous vertical line, contrasting with the dark horizon and fine horizontal rhythms of the water.

The story

I framed the boat head-on, drawn to the slender mast and the warm line it left across the blue. Small ripples broke that reflection into fragments, while the horizon remained almost perfectly straight. With no sail raised, the boat seemed to belong to the stillness rather than to any destination. I left room beneath it for the reflection to wander, letting that fragile thread carry the eye through the water.
