01

Between Foam And Shade

MG-1157

Late September finds the shore bright with orange canopies and pale sand. Foam spreads into a fine lace beside the footprints, its soft hiss meeting the quiet of the loungers. Beneath the open umbrellas, small pockets of shade shelter the beachgoers while nearby chairs remain empty. Across the broad space between water and shade, the next wave draws another shifting boundary.

People gather beneath a large leafy tree beside a crowded sunlit park lawn, with city buildings beyond.

02

Beneath the August Canopy

MG-1288

August light gathers on the open grass, where small groups stand, stroll, and settle onto blankets. Beneath the tree, patches of sunlight break across the bare earth. Two figures linger near the trunk at the boundary between shade and brightness. Beyond them, the buildings remain a distant edge; for now, the lawn holds the afternoon.

03

A Clearing For Summer

MG-1287

August light fills the clearing, reaching the grass in bright patches beneath the trees. Blankets mark small islands where people settle close together, while others walk toward the open lawn. Beyond the foliage, warm-colored towers catch the sun. The city remains in sight, but here the afternoon makes room for lingering.

A performer in a yellow Pikachu costume plays violin on rocks beneath trees, with saxophones and pedals nearby.

04

A Clearing For Music

MG-1286

August light slips through the canopy and pools on the rock. Beneath the costume’s tall yellow ears, a violin rests against a shoulder and the bow crosses its strings. The saxophones wait nearby, their brass surfaces gathering small flashes of sun. Cables curl over the uneven stone, turning a patch of ground into a temporary stage. The scene holds woodland shade and bright make-believe together.

Rowboats cross a green lake beneath leafy trees and twin ornate towers, with pink flowers in the foreground.

05

Where Towers Drift

MG-0521

August light rests on the towers and picks out the edges of the leaves. An oar lifts from the lake, spilling a brief silver splash beside the nearest boat. Across the water, smaller boats drift along the dark margin of trees. Pink flowers hold their place at the shore while the reflected buildings loosen into wavering bands of gold and blue.

06

The Long Blue Afternoon

MG-0445

From above the beach, I watched the shoreline gather the afternoon into a single curve. Umbrellas punctuated the sand, while swimmers stood in water so pale it seemed to borrow its color from the sky. Farther out, boats left thin white lines across the deeper blue. I framed the scene to keep those small human traces beside the wide reach of water, letting the beach remain busy without disturbing the spaciousness beyond it.

07

A Thousand Small Summers

MG-0407

From above, I watched the beach gather into patches of color: blue shelters in rows, orange umbrellas opening bright circles on the sand. My eye kept returning to the waterline, where the arrangement loosened and people stepped into the foam. Each wave briefly redrew that edge. I wanted to hold the bustle and the repetition together, the many separate afternoons unfolding inside one wide sweep of summer light.

08

A Thousand Small Summers

MG-0398

From above, I watched the beach gather into small arrangements: a circle beneath an umbrella, chairs turned toward the water, someone standing alone in the shallows. Blue repeated itself everywhere, linking the shade on the sand to the open sea. I framed the shoreline so the crowded beach and the broad water could share the picture. Each small wave drew a white line between them, then let it disappear.

09

Summer in Multitudes

MG-0384

From above, I watched the shoreline gather hundreds of small, separate moments. Someone stood at the edge of the foam; others floated beyond it, scattered across the turquoise water. On the sand, umbrellas overlapped like patches of bright fabric, each sheltering a little world. I framed the beach along its diagonal, leaving room for the blue to stretch outward. What drew me in was that contrast: so much activity beside such an expansive field of water.

An elevated view shows a busy sandy beach with colorful umbrellas and palm trees beside a white high-rise, with a long pier and boat wakes across turquoise water.

10

Summer in Blue

MG-0380

From above, I watched the beach gather into small arrangements of color: yellow umbrellas, blue chairs, palms leaning toward the sand. Beyond them, the water opened into a blue that seemed to hold everything at a distance. I kept the white building at the edge of the frame, a firm boundary against that expanse. Across the middle, the pier offered a quieter rhythm, while boats left brief white marks farther out.

A whitewashed bell tower overlooks blue-domed churches, pastel hillside buildings, and the sunlit sea in Oia, Santorini, beneath a broad blue sky.

11

Where Bells Hold Light

MG-0326

I framed the bell against the sky, drawn to the green of its weathered metal among so much white and blue. Beyond the arch, the village gathered in layers: a yellow wall, a pink terrace, a dome holding its own small piece of sky. The sea glittered along the cliff below. I wanted to keep both scales in the photograph—the intimacy of these worn surfaces and the open distance beyond them.

A yellow vintage-style car carrying boards and an Aloha sign is parked on a rocky point surrounded by turquoise sea beneath a clear blue sky.

12

Where Roads Become Blue

MG-0278

I framed the car from behind, letting the water stretch out on either side until the road seemed to have disappeared altogether. The yellow body and the boards above it held their own against that enormous blue. What caught my attention was the pause implied by the scene: a vehicle made for movement, standing at the edge of somewhere it could not go. I wanted the photograph to stay in that pause.

An elevated view of a busy sandy beach shows rows of blue and orange umbrellas, lounge chairs, palm trees, and swimmers in turquoise surf.

13

A Thousand Small Summers

MG-0276

From above, I watched the beach become a loose arrangement of blues and oranges. Beneath each umbrella, a small world carried on; along the water, those separate worlds briefly crossed. I framed the shoreline as it slipped between the chairs and the swimmers, its white edge continually changing. What held my attention was the contrast: the careful rows on the sand, and the sea refusing to repeat itself exactly.

Golden light casts long palm shadows across a colorful patterned plaza in front of the turquoise-roofed beachfront pavilion at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

14

Where Shadows Unfurl

MG-0265

I framed the pavilion between the palms, leaving room for the pavement to lead the eye. Its colored curves seemed to carry the sea into the square, while the low sun drew another pattern across them. Beyond the columns, a narrow strip of ocean held the horizon. I wanted to keep that balance in the photograph: the bright geometry of a public place and the open water waiting just beyond it.

Three metal lanterns on circular floating platforms decorated with colorful glass spheres and netting recede across rippling turquoise water.

15

Lanterns in Turquoise

MG-0251

I framed the nearest lantern low in the image, leaving room for the water to carry the eye toward the other two. What held my attention was the contrast between the dark metal frames and the bright glass gathered around their bases. Each small ripple loosened their reflections, turning straight edges into uncertain lines. I wanted the photograph to keep that balance: solid objects, brilliant color, and a surface that would never quite hold still.

16

The Shape Of Leisure

MG-1036

On this March day, the shore holds two rhythms: scattered bodies in the water and bright clusters of shade on the sand. A narrow line of foam advances toward the footprints, then thins away. Blue umbrellas repeat down the beach, interrupted by red canopies and small wheels of rainbow color. Beneath the palms, shadows stretch across the sand while people linger at the water’s edge.

17

Every Direction, Blue

MG-1128 · key west Florida

On this November day, the terrace holds the brightness of a lingering summer. Pink, coral, and yellow stools gather beneath green umbrellas, their empty seats turned toward the water. The signpost offers distant cities in every direction, but the horizon asks for no departure. Sunlight rests on the weathered railing, and a narrow line of palms separates blue water from blue sky.

18

A Shore in Patterns

MG-1796

On this March day, the shore holds two rhythms: the scattered movements of people and the steady arrival of surf. Orange umbrellas glow against the pale sand, while blue canopies echo the water beyond. Walkers follow the narrow band of wet beach, their shadows briefly accompanying them between waves. Farther out, swimmers rise through the turquoise folds. From above, the bustle settles into a quiet arrangement of color and space.

19

A Shore in Blue

MG-0591

In early March, the beach gathers beneath a scatter of blue canopies. People move between the shade of umbrellas and the pale shallows, pausing where foam spreads over the sand. An orange shelter interrupts the blue, a small, warm accent amid the crowd. From above, the many separate gestures settle into a leisurely rhythm, accompanied by the recurring hush of surf.

White terraces and stairs surround a turquoise pool with cream umbrellas, greenery, and deep blue water beyond.

20

Geometry Of Leisure

MG-1637

Late July light fills the terraces, leaving crisp shadows beneath the walls and umbrellas. The stairs turn between pockets of green, their gray treads offering a measured rhythm through the brightness. Beside the pool, empty loungers face the luminous water. Beyond this sheltered arrangement, the darker blue surface breaks into countless small glints.

21

An Architecture of Leisure

MG-0721

Late July light fills the terraces, leaving narrow reserves of shade beside the white walls. Umbrellas open in a pale procession above the pool, their edges almost touching. The eye follows a stairway, pauses at an empty lounger, then moves outward to the finely rippled sea. Between the bright water and the stretched fabric canopies, the day seems to hold its breath.

Two blue-and-white striped chairs flank a white table beneath turquoise shutters and a painted eye on a white wall.

22

A Seat In Blue

MG-0901

Late July light falls across the striped canvas and warms the wooden arms of two empty chairs. Between them, a shallow ashtray rests on the round white table. The shutters remain closed, their turquoise panels bright within the shaded recess. A painted eye looks outward above the words “Sunset house,” while shadows stretch across the ground. For now, the seats hold only sunlight.

A turquoise plunge pool sits among white hotel terraces, stairways, parasols and potted plants beneath a blue sky.

23

Terraces Of Summer

MG-1667

Late July light falls across Santorini’s whitewashed terraces, gathering brightness along every rounded parapet. Stairways climb between rooms and balconies, giving the hillside architecture its interlocking rhythm. Beneath the parasols, shaded chairs offer a pause from the sun. The small pool holds a concentrated blue, its ripples lending movement to the still geometry of walls.

Two people sit in striped beach chairs beside a colorful umbrella, facing turquoise water, with a palm trunk at right.

24

Hours In Color

MG-0846

On this March day, the shore holds a brightness that makes the calendar feel distant. Two chairs face the water, their stripes answering the yellow, pink, and blue of the umbrella. A towel lies loose on the sand, and bags gather at the umbrella’s slender pole. Beyond these small arrangements, the sea opens into long bands of blue, with a single sail near the horizon.

Red, gold, green and silver ornaments hang from mostly bare tree branches against a blue sky with white clouds.

25

A Canopy Of Celebration

MG-0875

Late November brings the language of celebration into the open air. Red and gold ornaments catch the sunlight between branches, and silver spheres hold tiny, curved reflections of greenery. The tree’s rough bark offers a steady counterpoint to their polished skins. Beyond this suspended gathering, clouds leave pale spaces for the eye to rest.

Colorful umbrellas and beachgoers dot pale sand beside white surf and vivid turquoise water, viewed from above.

26

Intervals Of Turquoise

MG-0805

On this November day, the shore holds a brightness all its own. Striped umbrellas gather small pockets of shade, with towels and bags clustered beneath their edges. Someone walks across the open sand while others remain close to the shelter of color. Along the beach, foam spreads into a thin white fringe, softening the boundary between rest and motion.

27

Along the Turquoise Edge

MG-0507

On this late-November day, the shore holds a bright constellation of umbrellas, towels, and resting figures. A bather stands in the shallows with a blue board as foam spreads toward the sand. Farther up the beach, striped canopies gather small pools of shade beside exposed rocks. The water advances in a pale, curling line, then thins, leaving room for another step.

Two blue and white sailfish ornaments project from white lattice beside shelves of colorful decorative objects.

28

An Ocean in Paint

MG-1857

On this March day, light gathers along two slender bills and catches the raised texture of blue paint. The fish hold their course against the lattice, their open mouths fixed in silent motion. Behind them, reds, greens, and yellows dissolve into soft pools of color. An imagined ocean rests here among timber and ornaments, its movement held in painted fins.

A bright blue ceramic frog with outstretched legs sits among colorful ornaments on weathered wooden slats.

29

A Glaze of Sunlight

MG-1856

On this March day, sunlight gathers along the ceramic frog’s blue brow and outstretched toes. Its painted red smile faces outward, framed by yellow patches and a green crown. Beneath it, rough wood breaks into orange flecks, answering the brilliant colors of the surrounding ornaments. Nothing moves, yet the spread of its limbs holds the suggestion of a leap.

Brightly painted spherical floats and weathered brown blocks hang on dark ropes in strong sunlight.

30

A Chorus of Floats

MG-1855

On this March day, sunlight gathers on a yellow float and slips across its orange underside. Dark rope passes through the bright forms, holding each within a vertical rhythm. Behind them, lavender and turquoise soften into patches of color, while worn brown surfaces retain their cracks and rough edges. The calendar marks March 20, yet the palette seems to hold a small season of its own.

Colorful weathered buoys hang on ropes, with a large orange and turquoise sphere sharply focused in the foreground.

31

A Chorus of Color

MG-1854

March sunlight catches the rough paint, settling into every ridge and hollow. A dark rope threads the bright sphere and continues downward through a brown float, holding the colors in a loose vertical rhythm. Behind it, yellow and red forms dissolve against green foliage. The eye moves from one suspended shape to another, then rests on the clear turquoise nearest the light.

Colorful painted floats hang from ropes, with a large blue-and-orange float in focus against blurred greenery.

32

Suspended Color

MG-1853

On this March day, sunlight catches the raised grain of the painted floats. Orange meets blue along an uneven edge, each ridge holding a small highlight or shadow. Behind the nearest sphere, other colors recede into the green blur of foliage. The ropes hold their quiet vertical lines, gathering this scattered brightness into rows.

Brightly painted round ornaments hang on knotted ropes among palm fronds, wooden beads, and red planters.

33

A Chorus Of Color

MG-1852

On this March day, sunlight settles into the pits and ridges of painted spheres. A palm frond stretches across the hanging colors, its narrow leaflets drawing green lines above the ropes. Between the bright rounds, dark wooden beads offer small intervals of shade. Beyond this close curtain of color, the street recedes into softness, leaving the eye to linger on a knot, a stripe, a rough edge of paint.

Brightly painted spherical and cylindrical floats hang on knotted ropes against sunlit green foliage.

34

A Chorus Of Floats

MG-1851

On this March day, sunlight gathers on the painted curves and catches the raised fibers of each knot. A red-and-white sphere hangs above an ochre cylinder, its worn surface holding small shadows. Behind it, pink and turquoise dissolve into the green of the foliage. The ropes draw quiet lines through the crowded colors, giving each bright shape its own interval of space.

Colorful swan-shaped ceramic vessels with floral patterns sit on a turquoise table at an outdoor pottery display.

35

A Flock Of Color

MG-1048

On this March day, sunlight settles into the white interiors of the ceramic birds. Their painted flowers crowd together, each petal edged against another patch of brilliant color. A tall green neck bends toward the table, repeating the smaller curves gathered beside it. Beyond this motionless flock, the outdoor display recedes into shade, and a pale path opens along its edge.

Colorful buoys hang on ropes in sunlight, with a large orange and turquoise buoy sharp against blurred greenery.

36

Color Held Aloft

MG-1047

On this March day, sunlight gathers in the rough skin of a painted buoy. Turquoise meets orange along an uneven edge, each ridge of paint holding a small highlight. Behind it, yellow and red shapes recede among dark cords and softened greenery. The hanging forms make a quiet curtain, their worn surfaces carrying as much presence as their brilliant color.

A smiling orange sun ornament with multicolored patterned rays hangs beneath wooden beams and slats.

37

A Sun Beneath Shelter

MG-1046

On this March day, daylight slips between the roof slats and meets a sun that needs no open sky. Its blue eyes look outward beneath fine painted lashes, while pink, green, and yellow rays hold their places around the orange face. Spirals, flowers, and crossed lines give each point its own small rhythm. Beyond the blue rim, latticework and other bright ornaments soften into the background, leaving this painted smile to fill the shelter.

Chrome Superleggera lettering casts shadows on metallic red car bodywork beside a black perforated grille.

38

Scarlet And Script

MG-0958

On this November day, light gathers in the red paint like a small reserve of warmth. Each chrome letter carries a bright edge and a dark echo beneath it. Above the script, the grille breaks the glare into rows of silver points. The wider machine remains outside the frame; here, its promise of motion rests in a still arrangement of curves.

39

Gilded Stillness

MG-0957

In this November frame, light gathers along the gold edges of a wheel that remains still. Behind the spokes, the red caliper holds its bold patch of color against the worn gray disc. Small holes and circular marks interrupt the sheen, bringing the eye back to the material surface. Everything suggests rotation, yet the moment offers only the quiet intricacy of metal at rest.

40

Vermilion in Repose

MG-0956

On this November day, sunlight gathers along the orange ridge of the hood vent. Tiny flecks in the paint sparkle beside the dark opening beneath it. Farther back, the round mirror dissolves into soft red curves and scattered highlights. The frame holds no road ahead, only the stillness of polished metal under the light.

A vintage car interior with a red steering wheel, chrome horn ring, cream door upholstery, and round dashboard gauges.

41

Scarlet And Chrome

MG-0954

On this November day, light gathers along the chrome ring and breaks into small, brilliant reflections. The cream door panel offers a soft counterpoint to the insistent red of the wheel and dashboard. Beyond the glass, the world dissolves into pale shapes, leaving the cabin its own enclosed space. No hands turn the wheel; the promise of movement rests in a circle.

Two capped Coca-Cola bottles in cup holders inside a vintage car with red upholstery, cream trim, and chrome details.

42

A Pause In Red

MG-0953

On this November day, the frame holds a small world of red, cream, and polished metal. Light catches the bottle caps and follows the chrome around the steering wheel. The two bottles remain sealed, their dark contents still beneath the familiar white script. Everything suggests a pause before departure, a moment when the promise of the road stays just beyond the frame.

43

Scarlet And Silver

MG-0952

November light gathers on the red door and breaks into bright ribbons along the chrome. The mirror’s rounded back folds fragments of sky and surrounding shapes into a small, distorted world. Beyond it, cream seats hold alternating bands of light and shadow. The car remains still, its surfaces offering the quiet suggestion of a journey.

A gold car front displays Duke’s flags, cat emblems, a framed plaque, chrome trim, and a round yellow lamp.

44

Chrome And Keepsakes

MG-0950

On this November day, the car holds a patchwork of sky and trees in its polished curves. Three small flags rise above the plaque, their dark fabric edged with blue light. A painted cat grins beside the weathered badge, and the yellow lamp gathers brightness in its ribbed glass. Everything rests close together: metal, cloth, lettering, and the small emblems that make a machine feel personal.

Two round car headlights framed by engraved chrome, purple accents, and vivid blue reflections.

45

Filigree And Reflection

MG-0949

On this November day, light gathers along the polished rims and breaks into blue ribbons. The glass holds its fine vertical ridges beneath the curved chrome shades. Engraved leaves and curls bring a delicate, almost textile-like surface to the metal. Within the tight frame, the road disappears; only ornament, reflection, and the quiet presence of the machine remain.

Chrome trim and a crossed-flags emblem on a dark Chevrolet Impala, with partial lettering and vivid reflections.

46

Chrome Remembers Color

MG-0947

On this November day, the car gathers its surroundings into narrow ribbons of color. Blue pools across the chrome, and green traces the edge above the badge. The little impala holds its leap over crossed flags, a promise of movement fixed in metal. Beneath it, reflected shapes soften across the dark paint, leaving the world outside the frame indistinct.

A round chrome car mirror and polished door reflect trees and pavement against a blurred blue and purple background.

47

A World In Chrome

MG-0946

On this November day, the world gathers on a small curve of chrome. Trees bend inward, pavement narrows, and a patch of sky gleams across the rounded metal. Below, green reflections stretch along the door like brushstrokes drawn through wet paint. The car remains still while its polished surfaces give everything around it a gentle motion.

A vintage car's round chrome side mirror and glossy door reflect trees and sky beneath purple upholstery.

48

A World In Chrome

MG-0944

On this November day, the world gathers on a small dome of chrome. Trees bend around its edges, and blue sky narrows into bright ribbons along the door. Beyond the reflective metal, purple upholstery offers a soft, quiet counterpoint. The car stands still while its surfaces give the surrounding world a liquid shape.

A round chrome spotlight beside the windshield of a red vintage car reflects buildings, trees, and blue sky.

49

Scarlet And Chrome

MG-0941

On this November day, sunlight gathers along the chrome rim and spills across the red paint. A small world bends inside the lamp: a building tilts, trees curve, and blue sky pools around the bulb. Beyond its sharp circle, the cabin retreats into shade. The car remains still, while reflections give its surfaces a quiet motion.

Close-up of a red vintage car with chrome trim, round lamps, and a spare tire, with cars and people blurred behind.

50

Crimson And Chrome

MG-0940

November sunlight settles on the red bodywork and breaks into small flashes along the chrome. In the larger lamp, reflections gather into a miniature world of sky and surrounding shapes. The spare tire offers a dark, textured counterweight to all this polish. Beyond the car, people and other vehicles dissolve into color, leaving the old machine momentarily alone with the light.

Close-up of a carbon-fiber rear wing above vivid orange-red sports car bodywork, with blurred people behind.

51

The Weave Of Speed

MG-0936

November sunlight catches the carbon weave, drawing silver threads across the black surface. Beneath it, orange-red paint glows around the wing’s sharply defined shadow. People soften into indistinct shapes beyond the car, leaving the foreground to its intricate pattern and polished edges. Everything rests, yet each curve seems to anticipate the pressure of air.

A silver helmet with a red winged horse rests behind the red cockpit of a polished silver open-top sports car.

52

The Shape Of Waiting

MG-0933

November sunlight gathers on the helmet and spills across the polished bodywork. Reflections of sky and branches stretch over the metal, bending with each curve. Beyond the windshield, people and parked cars dissolve into patches of shade and color. The red cockpit remains empty, and the small winged horse seems poised for a journey that has not yet begun.

53

Chrome Holds The Sky

MG-0928

On this November day, sunlight gathers along the windshield frame and flashes across the round mirror. The street contracts into its curved surface: trees, buildings, and small figures share a bright miniature world. Decals on the glass offer signs of allegiance and remembrance, held above the dark sweep of the bodywork. Beyond them, people soften into color while the parked car holds the sky.

54

Chrome And Remembrance

MG-0924

In this November frame, green paint and polished metal hold the light with jewel-like intensity. The eye follows the engine’s close-set ribs, then pauses at a small message in gold: “MISS U DAD.” Amid the elaborate surfaces, those three words feel unexpectedly quiet. The machine becomes a place where ornament and remembrance share the same gleam.

55

Cobalt And Chrome

MG-0923

On this November day, sunlight gathers along the grille in small, brilliant points. Blue paint holds a second sky, bending clouds and buildings around the curves of the hood. Beyond the windshield, palms and display banners rise above the red seats. People linger at the edges, while the car remains still, its suggestion of motion contained in every sweeping line.

56

Blue In Full Sun

MG-0922

On this November day, sunlight gathers along the chrome bars and scatters across the deep blue paint. Red seats rise behind the windshield, a warm counterpoint to the cool bodywork. Across the curved fenders, the surrounding street bends into fragments of palm, sky, and passing figures. The car remains still, holding a restless world in its reflections.

Close-up of a Ferrari’s rear with yellow stripes, an ornate skull decal, chrome badges, and a red lower panel.

57

Chrome And Marigold

MG-0919

On this November day, light settles sharply on metal, turning the yellow stripes into bright paths across the frame. An ornate skull rests above the lettering, its fine curls contrasting with the broad geometry of the bodywork. Reflected figures become fleeting fragments along the dark trim. Below them, the chrome horse holds its raised gesture against a sweep of red.

Orange steering wheel and dashboard with round gauges, metal switches, perforated pedals, and a matching gear knob.

58

An Arc Of Vermilion

MG-0914

On this November day, the cockpit holds a brightness of its own. Light runs along the wheel’s polished rim and gathers on the small metal switches behind it. Circles repeat from the gauges to the footwell, where red shows through the silver panels. No hands interrupt the wheel’s broad arc; the machinery rests in a quiet interval before motion.

Slender golden stems and long green leaves cross diagonally against a softly blurred turquoise background.

59

Threads of Summer

MG-0203

I looked between the leaves rather than beyond them. From this close, the stems crossed like fine threads, each catching a different measure of light. The turquoise behind them gave the smallest details room to stand out: a pale tip, a warm orange edge, the dark seam of a leaf. I held the frame around those intersections, drawn to the way a dense patch of growth could become something so open and spare.

A person stands beneath a handwritten umbrella beside bags, a suitcase, and a brick wall backed by an iron fence.

60

Shelter Written By Hand

MG-1313

On this late-August day, sunlight reaches the pavement while the handwritten canopy holds a small patch of shade. Words crowd its panels and the yellow fabric draped over a suitcase, turning everyday surfaces into declarations. A hand extends toward a bright red bag; nearby, blue fabric stretches along the brick ledge. Behind the fence, dense leaves catch the light, offering a quiet counterpoint to the insistent lettering.

A rusty vintage truck covered in stickers stands behind rope barriers beside red brick paving and dense greenery.

61

A Thousand Small Arrivals

MG-1311

August sunlight falls across the brick paving and catches the truck’s rusted curves. Across its doors and fenders, small printed emblems crowd together until the metal becomes a patchwork of voices. The wheels remain still behind the sagging rope, while palms rise against the blue. Beneath the nearby foliage, shade offers a quiet counterpoint to all this brightness.

A mint-green bicycle with pink rims stands beside a red hydrant beneath Route 1 end and mile zero signs.

62

Where the Road Rests

MG-0576 · key west Florida

Late August light falls hard across the pavement, tracing each bicycle spoke in shadow. Above the pineapple-patterned basket, the road announces its end, though traffic continues through the intersection. Pink rims and a green frame bring a small, bright pause to the geometry of poles and wires. The bicycle rests beside the red hydrant, offering a quieter measure of distance.

A bird-shaped metal garden ornament with a red beak and a fan of green, yellow-striped globes and smaller blue spheres stands among sunlit plants.

63

A Garden Constellation

MG-0178

I framed the bird where the garden seemed to gather around its feet. Light caught the green globes unevenly, leaving some luminous and others tucked into shade. Through the lens, the blue spheres became small pauses between the larger striped forms. I was drawn to that meeting of deliberate pattern and unruly growth: a creature made by hand, standing among leaves that had no intention of following its geometry.

Colorful weathered boards stand upright among coconut palms, with sunlight forming a starburst through green fronds against a blue sky.

64

Where Summer Stands

MG-0153

I looked up from the bright boards into a canopy that seemed to hold the sun between its leaves. From this angle, the boards and palm trunks shared the same upward reach, their surfaces marked in different ways. I wanted to keep those small signs of wear alongside the brilliance of the light. What held my attention was the pause: objects made for movement standing quietly beneath the palms.

A curved palm trunk rises from a rocky shoreline over turquoise water, with green fronds spreading against a blue sky above distant low islands and small boats.

65

The Long Lean

MG-0144

I followed the bend of the trunk with my camera, letting it carry my gaze out over the water before turning upward into the leaves. From this angle, the palm seemed to belong equally to the shore and the sky. Beyond it, small boats rested along a thin green horizon. I wanted to keep that contrast: the close, weathered surface of the bark and the broad blue distance opening around it.

An orange ridged seashell rests on a bare branch against a vivid blue sky, with a white shell and more branches blurred behind it.

66

An Unlikely Bloom

I framed the shell as though it were a blossom, letting the bare branch lead my eye toward its warm, ribbed surface. Against that blue, the orange seemed almost luminous. A pale shell farther back offered a quieter echo, just enough to suggest this was not the only unlikely bloom. I wanted the photograph to hold that small surprise: the shapes of the sea appearing where I might have expected leaves.

Lanterns On Turquoise

MG-1131

On this July day, the water carries four small islands of glass and metal. Blue, green, and amber spheres catch the daylight around lanterns that have no need to shine. Ripples stretch their reflections into wavering lines, then break them apart. Along the rocky edge, green fronds reach toward the water, and the spaces between the floats remain open and bright.

Lanterns Upon Turquoise

MG-0996

July daylight fills the clear water, leaving little hidden beneath its surface. Around each dark lantern, glass spheres gather small concentrations of blue, green, amber, and red. A submerged branch crosses beneath the nearest float, its warm brown grain interrupting the turquoise. Farther away, ripples stretch the reflections into wavering silhouettes. The lanterns remain unlit, their quiet promise of evening held within the brightness of the day.

An Invitation In Color

MG-1735

Late April light slips between the palms at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and stretches across the plaza. Blue, yellow, green, and red chairs face the open passage, each offering somewhere to pause. Above them, strings of bulbs trace loose curves against the pale sky. The pavilion frames a glimpse of beach grasses and luminous distance, keeping the shore close even here among the seats. For a moment, the color supplies all the bustle the quiet square needs.

A Pause Among Bathers

MG-0982

January arrives here in saturated blue and sunlit sand. Children hurry along the water's edge, crossing the golden-brown ribbons of seaweed. Beside them, a woman sits low on the beach and extends her hand toward a white dog. Its red leash lies slack across the sand. Beneath the crowded canopy of umbrellas, their pause seems to hold a little extra room.

A Chorus Of Color

MG-1872

On this late-September day, sunlight catches the droplets on painted wood. Empty chairs gather around tables in red, turquoise, violet, and yellow, each offering a different place to pause. Beyond the railing, the water opens into a broad blue interval, with a white ship set against the distant shore. The terrace holds its bright, unoccupied stillness beneath the spreading umbrellas.

A Seat Beside Blue

MG-0496

At the water’s edge in Key West, every empty stool offers a different color in which to pause. Sunlight warms the weathered boards beneath broad green umbrellas, and small ripples texture the blue beyond the railing. A wooden signpost points toward distant cities, placing their names against the open sky. Here at Sunset Pier, the eye travels only as far as the low line of palms before returning to a patch of shade.
